Narcissism can manifest in just about any relationship: love, family, even work, wreaking havoc on relationships, and poisoning th work atmosphere. A narcissistic coworker create the appearance that one is ineffective, lazy, behaving maliciously towards other employees or worse, towards the client or customer. One’s livelihood is at stake, and a stubborn stain might be left on one’s job history.

Narcissism is commonly misunderstood as simple self centeredness. “It’s always about them,” we might think about someone, labelling them a narcissist, and while it is always about the narcissist, there is much more to the narcissist than self centeredness.

The narcissist’s agenda is pathological. He or she expects you to be always available and utterly devoted, tolerant and willing to serve the narcissist. Questioning the narcissist’s agenda or behavior brings about swift and often devastating reprisals.

Narcissists are professionals at holding grudges, but are equally proficient at appearing normal, responsible and innocent.

What appeared, at first, to be a desirable relationship can be swallowed whole by having to cope with narcissistic behavior. The narcissist will do just about anything for the spotlight, to be the all-consuming star of every circumstance and relationship, and will embarrass, cajole, or denigrate, lie, and punish in service to this goal.
